Abstract

A study was held on the day care(DC) patients who attended from 1976 to 1990 at one psychiatric hospital in Japan. Some problems, raised during survey of DC patient¡¯s rehabilitation were summarized in this paper.

In the total 172 DC users during 15 years, 116 subjects were surveyed excluding 40 in-patients and 16 dead person.

As this hospital changed in DC services including abolition of duration limit from 1986, comparison between subjects started their DC attending in 1976-985 and 1986-1990 was conducted in aspect of DC attending duration.

The results are as follows :

After 1986, DC attending period was extended and a portion of more than one year DC user was 70%, on the other hand 16% before 1986.

More passive DC attending subjects showed more tendancy of extended DC period.

After 1986, ages of subjects at their first DC attending were highered, specially a portion of subjects in their age of more than forties was 49%, on the other hand 26% before 1986.

In the case of first DC attending subjects after 1986, single persons were increased compared with subjects before 1986, and many subjects were unemployed, particularly most of single person had no jobs when survey was conducted.

Many subjects answered that most helpful communicator was DC staffs.

On the basis of upper results, day hospitalism was discussed in association with a tendency of high age and motivations attended of subjects at their first DC, the importance of roles of DC staffs and community networks.
